Brian W. Abbott, DO

Brian W. Abbott, D.O. is board-certified in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, holds a CAQ in Primary Care Sports Medicine, and is Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSK).

Dr. Abbott often employs osteopathic manipulation in the care of his patients. Viewing the body as a functional unit, he performs a comprehensive exam, taking into account that few injuries occur in isolation and can be reflected throughout the body. With the use of gentle osteopathic techniques, he is able to help improve pain, body movement, and function.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a tool he uses to help diagnose injuries as well as for performing image-guided injections. In addition to traditional techniques for managing injuries, he also performs regenerative medicine injections including prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). These injections have been helpful in facilitating the healing of tendon, ligament, and joint injuries.

Dr. Abbott partners with his patients to help them meet their activity and performance goals.  He provides care with the understanding that an individual’s activity level, musculoskeletal health, and general well-being are strongly interdependent.  The human body is complex and, by nature, injuries are unique to each patient.  Dr. Abbott takes pride in individualizing his care and treatment plans to ensure his patient’s needs are met.

Throughout his sports medicine career, Dr. Abbott has been involved in the medical care of the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, as well as teams at Grand Valley State University, Aquinas College, Calvin College, and Davenport University.

Prior to joining Performance Injury Care & Sports Medicine, Dr. Abbott worked in a private orthopedic clinic in Maine. Dr. Abbott has also served as faculty for family medicine residents as well as practiced primary care in Seward, Alaska. In his free time, he enjoys mountain biking, running, snowboarding, camping, hiking, and spending time with his wife, two boys, cat, and dog.
